Following a historic run at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, the north African giants have not endured a favourable 2023 so far. A victory over Brazil at the beginning of the year was followed by a winless streak of three matches as back-to-back draws were compounded by a defeat to South Africa.

North Africa dominates not only at club level, but also on the national team front as Tunisia (31), Algeria (33) and Egypt (34) all accompany Walid Regragui’s men among the continent’s current top five best sides.

West Africa completes CAF’s top 10 as far as FIFA are concerned, with Senegal (18), Nigeria (39), Cameroon (43), Mali (50), Cote d’Ivoire (51), and Burkina Faso (55) rounding off the continent’s most competitive nations.
