The 2023 PGA Championship is here and making a welcome return to the Empire State.
For the first time since 2013, the PGA Championship will be held at Oak Hill Country Club in Rochester, N.Y. There, Justin Thomas — who last season beat Will Zalatoris in a three-hole playoff to take the Wanamaker Trophy — will seek to become just the third player in the stroke-play era to repeat as the PGA Championship winner, and first since Brooks Koepka in 2018 and 2019.
Koepka is one of 16 LIV Golf defectors who took the PGA course this week, including past winner Phil Mickelson, who last season decided not to defend his 2021 title. The tension between LIV golfers and PGA loyalists was pronounced at the Masters, to say the least, especially with Jon Rahm coming from behind to pass Koepka and don the green jacket in Augusta.
One golfer who will not attend this year’s event is Tiger Woods, who recently underwent ankle surgery after withdrawing early from the Masters.
