Eddie Howe’s transfer plans for Newcastle United this summer are beginning to take shape with the costs involved for three of their targets likely to set them back £50m apiece.
The Magpies are enjoying a superb season under the guidance of Howe. Currently third, they have lost just three times in the Premier League this season – the same as leaders Arsenal – and are on course to make a return to the Champions League.
And while both Manchester United and Tottenham are breathing down their necks, a run of five straight wins suggests they have the bit between their teeth.
That steely determination appears to have heightened in the wake of their 2-0 defeat to Manchester United in the Carabao Cup final. And while they missed a chance at winning a first trophy since 1955, a return to the Champions League for the first time in 20 years, would be hugely applauded.
Newcastle have certainly performed above expectations this season. However, Howe, alongside sporting director Dan Ashworth, are already hard at work identifying their targets for the summer.
And the Magpies are keen to strengthen their midfield and forward options with three classy targets in mind.
First up, Newcastle are making an express wish to lure Scott McTominay to the club from Manchester United.
The Red Devils are considering the sale of the Scotland midfielder, having received an approach from Newcastle in January.
Back then, Erik ten Hag decided to resist offers for the homegrown star, particularly in light of injury to Christian Eriksen.
However, with the player expressing a wish to appear more frequently, Ten Hag could be willing to sacrifice the star.

Newcastle learn costs needed to sign Harvey Barnes
To that end, they are reportedly demanding £50m for his services – with the star seemingly making clear his wish to leave.
Indeed, a move to Newcastle for McTominay seems the preferred option for all parties with a deal likely to go through quickly this summer.
As a result, Newcastle are already making moves for other summer additions.
And in recent weeks it has emerged that Leicester winger Harvey Barnes is also a strong target of Howe’s.
The once-capped England winger has two years remaining on his deal at the King Power Stadium. But with Leicester battling to avoid relegation, a move away this summer looks likely regardless of their status next season.
Now, Football Insider reports that Leicester have responded by placing a £50m valuation on Barnes’ head.
The left-sided star has notched 10 goals and three assists this season from 34 appearances. And if the Foxes do succumb to relegation, it will be through no fault of Barnes.
Alongside James Maddison, the two men have stood out as the two star men in a difficult season for the 2016 Premier League champions.
James Ward-Prowse over James Maddison for Newcastle
On the subject of Maddison, he too has long-standing links with Newcastle. Indeed, they saw two offers – the second reportedly worth £50m – turned down by Leicester last summer.
However, they will be powerless to prevent him moving on this summer. His deal is due to expire in summer 2024 – and talk of a move to Newcastle has reared its head again.
Tottenham, though, are seemingly in the driving seat to seal his signing. And while Spurs may not be able to offer Champions League football, they are reportedly ready to push through a £60m swoop with Daniel Levy a huge fan.
Not to be denied, however, Newcastle will instead turn their focus towards Southampton’s James Ward-Prowse.
The England man has performed exceptionally well this season, despite Saints’ woeful campaign. Currently bottom of the pile, they are four points adrift of safety as it stands.
And should their 11-year stay in the top flight come to an end, Ward-Prowse will almost certainly leave St Mary’s.
Also rated at £50m, a move to Tyneside would hold huge appeal.
As such, Newcastle are reportedly making the three players primary targets this summer with a triple £150m raid in their sights.
