Born in 1929 in Minneapolis, James began acting in 1954, gaining popularity in The New Adventures of Charlie Chan (1957–1958). 

He’s been in more than 650 films and TV shows, including Groucho Marx’s You Bet Your Life (1954), Bonanza (1960), Perry Mason (1962–1963), The Man from U.N.C.L.E. (1965–1966), Hawaii Five-O (1969–1974), Chinatown (1974) , Kung Fu (1972–1975), Blade Runner (1982), Big Trouble in Little China (1986), and Wayne’s World 2 (1993). He also voiced Chi-Fu in Mulan (1998) and, more recently, Mr. Gao in Turning Red (2022).
