BENGALURU: In what appears to be a new cyberfraud trick, miscreants morphed a 47-year-old man’s WhatsApp profile photo to show him with a nude woman. Later, they extorted over Rs 15 lakh from him.
The victim is Anand (name changed) of Ashraya Layout near Mahadevapura, a software engineer with a private firm. According to police, Anand was looking for home salon services online. He called a mobile number to book the service on April 8. Later, a miscreant identifying himself as Amit contacted him over the phone and informed him that his booking was not for home salon service but for escort service.
Soon after Amit’s call, the miscreants took Anand’s WhatsApp DP and morphed it with a nude woman. The gang then forwarded the morphed photo to Anand and threatened to share it on social media if he didn’t pay up.
The gang sent him multiple links and collected OTPs from him. In all, they extorted Rs 15 lakh between April 8 and 14, Anand told police. He filed a complaint with Whitefield CEN Crime cops and named Amit as the prime suspect.
