Alan Shearer has told Gareth Southgate to call midfielder Joe Willock up to the England squad after his influential showing for Newcastle United in their 2-0 victory against Manchester United.

The £25 million (Sky Sports) man opened the scoring for Eddie Howe’s side against Erik ten Hag’s men with a close-ranger header to cap off a tireless display at St. James’ Park.

Now, Alan Shearer has pledged Gareth Southgate to ensure that Joe Willock becomes an England international.

The former Arsenal attacker’s workrate turned many heads against United, as it has throughout the campaign as it is hard to imagine many more tireless runners in attacking roles than him in the Premier League.

And even on the ball, Willock’s ball-carrying made him such a dynamic presence for Newcastle on the break, and is what makes him such a threat when it comes to both sides of the game.

As Alan Shearer was picking his Premier League Team of the Week, he made it a point to mention that Joe Willock is deserving of an England call-up.

“Never stopped running, threatening on the counter time and again, and deservedly scoring Newcastle’s opening goal. England, are you watching?” he told the league’s official website.

Willock deserves a call-up

Considering the Euros kickstart in 2024, there is no better time to experiment with the squad for Gareth Southgate than in the lead-up to the tournament and that too, a year in advance.

With Joe Willock being in red-hot form in any case, Alan Shearer is right in suggesting that he deserves a place in the England squad on merit.

Whether Willock ends up translating his form at club level for country is an answer only time has in store for us.

But for the time being, there’s only way to find out.
