Careless disposal of solid fuel barbecue ashes caused an estimated $150,000 damage early Friday to a home in Saskatoon’s Varsity View neighbourhood, a fire inspector says.
The fire department said in a press release that they received multiple calls just after 5 a.m. Friday reporting a house on fire in the 1100 block of Osler Street.
Crews arrived to find all the occupants had escaped unharmed after being alerted by smoke alarms. Flames were visible at the back of the house, which were quickly knocked down. A positive pressure fan was used to remove smoke before the scene was turned over to a fire investigator around 7 a.m.

The release said the working smoke alarms were the reason the occupants were able to safely get out of the house without receiving injuries.
The incident was a good reminder to ensure alarms are routinely inspected, it added.
